In light of the attacks by terrorists, and fatalities due to murders, abuse, and car accidents, I refuse to pray for things to change. Instead, I'm going to do something about it.
It is so easy to show your support by changing your profile picture and adding #prayforwhatever when something happens. But what does that change? Yea, it's awesome that you are aware of the problems in the world and showing your support is nice. But all it does is prove that you check social media. What are you actually DOING to make a difference? Have you ever thought about buying socks and underwear and taking them down to your local VFW? Or maybe taking a warm meal to your local fire department? Or even sending the troops overseas a care package that has some M&M's, Car and Driver magazines, and some toothpaste? Maybe those aren't your favorite causes? Run down to the local wig shop and put $50 down on a wig for a little kid dealing with cancer or drop off some shoes at a school. Don't have much money? No problem. There are so many organizations out there where you can go volunteer from 30 minutes to 10 hours a week like Feeding SD, Backpacks for Kids, or reading classes at your local library.
It's so easy to get into the I Support the Cause mentality and thinking you're doing real good by posting pictures and changing your profile pic but saying you're doing it is only one part of it. Reality - you actually have to do something to really be supportive. Think of it as a leg on a chair that is three inches shorter than the other four. Sure, it's there and it is a leg, but what is it's purpose?
Now...go change that profile picture to show how much you support your favorite cause, then drive your happy self to the nearest Wal-Mart, Target, or Safeway and practice the DO part.
